What initial reaction do you have to tie the studies of Harlow and Deci to education?

It was really interesting to read the introduction of the studies of Harlow and Deci’s.   It is odd that in this century people would do something without a reward, but they are some people that do things for motivation or because they are interesting.  I agree with both Barb and Jacque comments.  I agree because sometimes students want to be praised or want the extra incentive as Barb mention.  Also, some students do focus more on their grades instead of learning the material as Jacque mention.  Tying this with students, I want students to understand the material, not because they have to or for the grade, but because they want too.  I would like students to be motivated about learning new material as they come to class.  As in the research, I want students to get interested in the material and take outside time of class to review the new material.
