I read chapter one and I instantly thought about the
schedules that I used to keep my kids on.
I have always told my kids that when they come home from school they
needed to do their homework, do their chores, and then they could play. What started happening was they began taking
short cuts. They did not take as much
pride in their homework, and when they cleaned their room I would just find
everything shoved back in drawers and in the closets. They wanted to go outside and play, but by
the time they finished the laundry list of things I wanted them to do, it was
either dark or time for supper. It’s
like Pink said, “It worked well---extremely well. Until it didn’t”. I
gave my kids more control and they now have the option to play first and
decompress after school. Allowing them
this freedom they have developed better time management and a clearer sense of
responsibility.
